This is German from Los Angeles. I met this guy 4 years ago shortly before he drove a small group including myself from Orange County, California to Ensenada, Mexico. He inspired me to learn Spanish, a goal I have strived for, though hit and miss, ever since. He told me crazy stories of gang violence that he witnessed firsthand during his upbringing in LA while driving our 12 passenger van like a formula 1 racer through the rocky dirt roads of rural Baja, Mexico. Never flinching. Never in danger. He was in complete control. He was able to walk through cultural barriers that, try as I might, I could not break down. Within minutes, German would become family to complete strangers, and that was my window into their world. It gave me an unparalleled feeling of reverence and I probably would not have taken the solo journey of lifetime last summer down to Central America and Southern Mexico had it not been for his influence.

Here's to you G-man, wherever you are.
